Mississippi Lignite Mining Company, an affiliate of The North American Coal Corporation, is engaged in the mining of coal used by electric utilities for power generation. Mississippi's Red Hills Mine in Ackerman, Miss., began production in the fourth quarter of 2000 and will delivers approximately 3.5 million tons of coal per year. The operation utilizes a Marion 8200 dragline and a P&H Shovel for overburden removal and reclaims about 120 acres of land annually. Its engineers identify economically recoverable reserves by conducting geologic and hydro geologic analysis and develop mine plans with three-dimensional computer modeling software. The Mississippi Lignite Mining Company received the 2000 MSHA Sentinels of Safety Award.
