Established in 1991, the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology is an academic unit of the University of Georgia that provides research and educational services. It offers research programs in the areas of bioinformatics, enzymology, glycobiology, molecular medicine, and plant and structural biology. The department features research-based subjects in graduate and undergraduate curriculum that prepare students for academia, agrobiology, biotechnology, immunology and government job sectors. The department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology hosts biochemical and molecular biological research that is funded by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense. It features more than 75 research laboratories, administrative and library areas, lecture rooms, and bioinformatics and computational biology facilities. The department also operates a fermentation plant that features fermenters and equipment for harvesting and processing bacteria. Its Complex Carbohydrate Research Center is a more than 140,000-square-foot building that specializes in carbohydrate research studies. The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology is located in Athens, Ga.
