Working with children does not have to be restricted to a classroom environment. Instead, it can be constructed wherever services for children are provided. As a professional Childrens Librarian and educational consultant, I have created a learning community within Childrens Departments and through professional development workshops. Those learning communities allowed children and adults to grow as learners by exploring literature, playing and interacting with developmental activities, and participating in programs. It is within the walls of our Storytime Room that I am able to reflect on my life mission to serve children. The power of storytelling has injected my mission to work with children. I have used storytelling throughout my early years of life to the present as a learning tool with those that I teach. Storytelling has allowed me many positive experiences as a child, in order to conquer the difficult valleys I walked. It is my responsibility to implement storytelling programming to enhance learning and to be a positive influence a child can reflect on in the future. In addition, I believe Children's Librarian's can continue to evolve their services to children and families by becoming active partners with other members of their community to support early learning development that contribute to lifelong success. Working with children should not be a passive experience but rather an active experience. To have an active experience means that the professional identifies the needs of each child and uses their learning community to embody each need to create an interdependent community. I believe that early childhood professionals need to examine each child they serve as part of a system. As a Childrens Librarian, I have the unique opportunity to work with the child and the parent. This experience has helped me to justify that early childhood professionals have to view childrens services in pieces, and once put together, they support the well-being of the child. Childrens Librarians help to enhance the literacy needs of children, yet, it is highly important that they reach out to other community organizations (i.e. healthcare, social services, and well centers) to provide families information and resources relating to the developing child. Opportunities to enhance the lives of children help me to strive to be a better person. I invite you to participate in our workshops and contact me for your next project to enhance learning potential. -Zachary Stier, Founder of ZLS Consulting
