Walking in the door of Picante is like suddenly finding yourself in El Mercado, San Antonio, with its brightly colored paper cutouts and charming Mexican artwork. Delicious smells of cumin and chiles fill your senses as the friendly staff greet you like friends. I have never been disappointed by the food--always prepared with fresh ingredients, just the right amount of authentic spices, served promptly and piping hot. My family's favorite is steak fajitas, a plentiful portion of tender, grilled steak served with warm, floury toritllas and all the fixings. Unless you are unusually hungry, you will find yourself with enough leftover for lunch tomorrow. Picante is a great place to linger with friends, the staff never hovers or makes you feel as if you are in the way. It really is like eating with family--a family with an extraordinary talent for preparing traditional Mexican cuisine, that is.
