At the beginning we had a very favorable impression of Guy as he was courting us for several months before gaining our business. He prided himself on high quality of his job, efficiency, and integrity. He kept offering and making multiple visits to our property to discuss various projects as they were evolving and was making adjustments to his proposals (later, we learned that we had to pay a fairly steep price for those "friendly visits", which has never been mentioned at the beginning of our relationship.)

After we signed him up for a fairly large project, he required an upfront payment (50%) - it should have been a RED flag. And when he cashed our check, his attitude has changed drastically. Our professional relationship deteriorated rapidly over the course of one week since he started the project.

On his second day at the job, we pointed some obvious quality issue with the way he installed slate tiles and asked him to fix it. He became extremely defensive and rude. Since then he kept on insisting for us to tell him the minute details of every step he was about to take. The job was hardly moving.

We were spending many hours over the phone and taking time off work to provide guidance at his request. Since neither I nor my wife is an expert in design and construction, we had to frequently defer to the professional help of the architect we hired to develop a master plan. The 1.5 hours of her supposed (per contract) involvement with providing initial guidance to a contractor quickly started to grow exponentially, and our interaction with Guy became even more challenging.

The final tipping point in our decision to terminate the contract with Guy was his use of profanity and threats in our address. He walked away after 1 week on site with 25% of the total budget for the project that was expected to run for 2 months. Not a single item (out of 7) completed. The tile job never fixed and damage inflicted to the porch steps.
