The Department of Toxic Substances Control is a department of the State of California that regulates hazardous waste, cleans up existing contamination and looks for ways to reduce the hazardous waste produced in California. More than 1,000 scientists, engineers and specialized support staff ensure that companies and individuals handle, transport, store, treat, dispose of and clean up hazardous wastes appropriately. Through these measures, DTSC contributes to greater safety for all Californians. On January 1, 2003, the Registered Environmental Assessor program joined DTSC. The REA program certifies environmental experts and specialists as being qualified to perform a number of environmental assessment activities. The department s main office is in Sacramento, Calif.
