Westmoreland Coal Company operates surface coal mining complexes throughout the Western United States. It also has power/energy operations in the Eastern and Western United States. It produces approximately 28 million tons of coal and generates 2.8 million milliwatt hours of electric power on an annual basis. The company s two North Carolina plants are coal-fired and deliver base-load power to Dominion Virginia Power. Its Colorado plant is gas-fired and serves as a peaking unit for Xcel Energy. Westmoreland has earned various energy sector awards, including the Platts/BusinessWeek Global Energy Strategic Merger of the Year award in 2002 and the ColoradoBiz/UMB Bank Energy and Natural Resources Company of the Year award in 2002. The company was established in 1854 and has headquarters in Hardin, Mont.
