Founded in 1936 to serve residents who had been spurned by investor-owned utilities, Walton Electric Membership Corporation is a nonprofit electric utility that serves northeastern Georgia. It supplies energy to more than 100,000 accounts throughout 10 counties: Athens-Clarke, Barrow, DeKalb, Greene, Gwinnett, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Rockdale and Walton. The corporation is governed by a board of directors that includes representatives from each of its service area s different geographical regions. Walton Electric Membership Corporation has headquarters in Monroe, Ga., and additional offices in Snellville and Watkinsville. It is financed by the Cooperative Finance Corporation and is among the largest of the United States nearly 1,000 electric cooperatives.
