Cancer research. Community Cancer Research Foundation is a non-profit organization that works to improve the access area residents have to cancer research so they don't have to leave their community. These efforts have provided the keys to link area patients with research sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and 13 major research cooperatives in the U.S. and Canada. The foundation supports research initiatives at the three hospitals of the Community Healthcare System: Community Hospital in Munster; St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago; and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. These trials evaluate new prevention, diagnostic and treatment options for breast, lung, prostate and colon cancers, lymphoma, adult leukemia and myelodysplasia.
