Chethan Sathya, MD, MSc, is a pediatric trauma surgeon and National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded firearm injury prevention researcher. He holds a masters in clinical epidemiology from the University of Toronto, in addition to completing a fellowship in global journalism at the Munk School of Global Affairs and a global public health program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.Working as a pediatric trauma surgeon in Chicago and New York exposed Dr. Sathya to many gun violence cases, which fueled his focus to find a solution. As a surgeon-journalist with firsthand experience with pediatric gun violence victimsfeatured on the critically acclaimed Netflix docuseries Emergency NYCDr. Sathya has a unique perspective and passion for telling these children's stories and being an advocate for change.Dr. Sathya was awarded a $1.4 million NIH research grant to implement a first-of-its-kind protocol for screening people at risk of firearm injurypart of Northwells We Ask Everyone. Firearm Safety is a Health Issue research study. He uses his clinical expertise as pediatric trauma surgeon to develop best practices to prevent injury and death from traumatic circumstances, and to provide exceptional care for children who have been affected.Dr. Sathya helped start the National Gun Violence Prevention Learning Collaborative for Hospitals and Health Systems, a multi-year, multi-phase platform where hospitals and health systems can learn about gun violence prevention from experts, engage in open dialogue, and create best practices to prevent injuries and deaths. He has presented on gun violence prevention in many forums and has bylines at CNN, Scientific American, The Washington Post, TIME and more. He has been a keynote speaker at many events, including the American Hospital Associations Leadership Summit on Violence Prevention and the Healthcare Association of New York States symposium.
