I have been a bird owner for 20 years and I visited the Bird Exchange for the first time yesterday (looking for a bird) The cages are DIRTY and the signs all say "not for sale" so the inventory was only two birds. The bird that I was pushed on was a very bedraggled pre-owned bird with cage that was old and broken. I still wanted to rescue the poor thing but the price was so overinflated and REQUIRED the purchase of the cage! When I said I already have a cage and would just like to care for the bird the man said that "it is her home-we don't do that here" Honestly, I love birds but I really don't think a clean, unbroken and larger cage would traumatize a well loved bird. I do not recommend loosely defined "bird exchange" from this terrible place.

I've only been here once. Many birds were kept in galvanized chicken wire cages. Zinc is a heavy metal that is toxic to birds, and birds love to chew. A big risk. Also, the birds were on an all sunflower seed diet. Serious nutrition deficiency. The pellets I needed to buy were more than a year past the expiration. There was an obviously sick Scarlett in a filthy cage with no privacy. They were firm on the price, which was nearly double the price of Scarlett's - healthy birds, rather than a bird who looked like she knew she was dying. If I could've gotten a deal, or some sort of health guarantee, but I couldn't afford their price and the thousands in vet bills. This place makes me physically ill. It's a horror show for parrot lovers. Regarding, karlita and grooming, I hope you follow the standard of at least one physical each year by a certified avian vet. I've taken in several sick birds. I've had good luck, but the heartbreak is no less. Please, karlita, make sure your birds are healthy. Ask your bird vet about The Bird Exchange. If you don't have an avian vet, go to AAV.org for a list of certified avian vets in your area.

Save Yourself the Heartbreak

I ONLY recommend this store for buying toys and cages (and disinfect them when you bring them home)- please stay away from their birds. I bought one parrotlet from them, who died within two months due to a respiratory infection he could have only caught during his time being "bred" there. The other bird I bought was a rescue and had only spent a limited amount of time there and was fine. I recounted this tale and heard another man had bought many lovebirds over the years from Jayne, only to have them die within months. She is a sweet woman but I cannot recommend purchasing a bird from her. Parrots are lifelong companions and it is heartbreaking to have them die unexpectedly and quickly.
