I stopped by the Wilton store today to pick up a bottle of champagne for a special occasion evening. I saw a bottle, Vilnart & Cie - Grand Premier Cru, I hadn't tried before and selected it for purchase. The tagged price was $59.99. At the register the selection was rung up at $72.99. When I questioned the clerk I was told that bottle had been on sale and the sale was over. I again said the price listed under the champagne was $59.99 and that is what I should be charged. The clerk and a second clerk argued saying it was an honest mistake and there was nothing they could do about the price. If I wanted the wine it was $72.99. The difference of say $13.00 was trivial but the principle was not. You listed a price, mistake or no mistake and that price should be honored. I too own a business in Connecticut and one that has been around for 30+ years. We pride ourselves on quality and our customer service, yet we too make mistakes. When mistakes do happen and they are our fault we will do whatever it takes to make the customer happy. And we do not deal in $30 bottles at retail!! I spend in the neighborhood of $100-$150/week at Ancona’s Wilton store so roughly $6000 if you count the holiday surges. The $13 was really trivial but the treatment was not. The solution I will take my business elsewhere.
