Dr. Herschels love of vision correction began 25 years ago, when he continued his training in New Orleans under Dr. Marguerite McDonald, the world-renowned pioneer in refractive surgery, in a two-year cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery fellowship at the Louisiana State University Eye Center. As a chief fellow at the Eye Center, Dr. Herschel coordinated the sites FDA Phase III clinical trials on myopic photorefractive keratotomy (PRK) and hyperopic PRK that eventually led to the approval of LASIK and PRK in the United States. Afterward, Dr. Herschel practiced comprehensive ophthalmology in Dallas, where he focused on cataract and refractive surgery, cornea, external disease, and anterior segment. Dr. Herschel completed the fourth fellowship in oculoplastic surgery before joining Magruder Eye Institute in 2000.
